The weekend before the festival and just 6000 daffodils have arrived as “green pencils” to be nurtured into bloom, beside radiators, if necessary. The display challenge is greater this year as the cold has stopped the daffodils growing so there are fewer varieties available. However there will still be a spectacular show in the 12th century listed church of St Mawgan in Meneage from February 14th
Whatever happens we shall celebrate the wonderful industry that surrounds us in West Cornwall and the delightful and varied daffodil by decking the church with thousands of yellow trumpet daffodils, from our main sponsor local growers R H Scrimshaw and Sons, to give all your senses a treat with the sight and smell of the cheerful blooms. View equipment used over 50 years ago, listen to music from local musicians and admire displays of paintings, photographs and embroidery with a daffodil theme. The music includes Christin Robertson playing dulcimer and singing medieval and folk music on Saturday morning, Cornish Male Voice group Thraw’d Together on Saturday afternoon, classical guitarist Richard Collington and harpist Jade Hamzelou at lunchtime on Sunday and the Maen Voes Choir from St Keverne and Andrew Woods playing organ on Sunday afternoon.
The Festival takes place on Saturday February 14th to Monday February 16th from 10.30 am to 4.30 pm each day and is free to enter. Light refreshments will be available including pasties from Gear Farm and homemade soup at lunchtime on Saturday and Sunday and tea/coffee and cakes all day every day
To start the festivities off on Saturday, the bells will ring and our curate, the Revd Heather Aston will give the opening blessing at 10.30am. On Sunday there is a Celtic evening service at 5.00pm, taken by the Rector, the Revd Lesley Walker, at which the Bishop of St Germans, the Rt Reverend Chris Goldsmith will be the preacher.
This year for the first time we are open on Monday which is likely to be less crowded and it will be easier to park.
We are grateful to the many local businesses that have sponsored this event, a full list of which will be available in the programme and in the church.
